Yes, Michael Porter has had much better games as of late. But, is that because of late none of our opponents have had guards that could really apply any pressure on Porter; offensively or defensively? This new label of "steadying influence" all started in the Indiana game. You know how someone says a girl has a nice personality when you ask what is she like? It is a tell-tale sign that she isn't a looker, right? OK, well, calling Porter a "steadying influence" is a nice way of saying he doesnt make many mistakes but can't make many plays.
Against our "cupcakes"....Delaware St-Longwood-Lamar-MVSU-Indiana-App St-Tenn St-FAU-C Michigan.....
Porter is playing 21.3mpg. He has 33 points on 7 3Ptrs, but only 5 FTAs. He has dished out 32 assists to only 15 TOs while snatching 10 steals.
In our losses and games against quality opponents.....VMI-@UNC-Kansas St-@W Virginia-Miami......
Porter is still playing 21.4mpg. However, he has only 11pts and 1 3Ptr. He has also turned the ball over 18 times while only dishing out 11 assists and getting 1 steal.
Now, let's get on to whose fault this is......DeAndre Liggins. First of all, everytime Liggins enters the game he allows himself to be beaten on defense by not staying disciplined. And what is the deal with him pressuring in the backcourt and never sees or makes an adjustment for the pick that is coming? Then his man goes by and draws everybodys attention until Liggins catches up? But, there is clearly an issue with intensity and motivation with this young man.
Against our "cupcakes"....Delaware St-Longwood-Lamar-MVSU-Indiana-App St-Tenn St-FAU-C Michigan.....
Liggins is playing 20.5mpg. He has 67 points on 5 3Ptrs, and has 24FTAs. He has dished out 33 assists to 29 TOs while snatching 10 steals.
In our losses and games against quality opponents.....VMI-@UNC-Kansas St-@W Virginia-Miami......
Liggins is playing 21.2mpg. His scoring dips a little to 28pts, but he still gets to the FT line. His 3Pt shooting has suffered at 0-10. His assists go up(20), but still has the high number of TOs(19).
So, to me it seems like a simple choice of likelihood. Is Michael Porter more likely to be able to improve as a playmaker against higher quality opponents? Or, is DeAndre Liggins more likely to be able to reduce his number of TOs while still improving his abilities as a playmaker?
Seems to me that Liggins' being in the coaches doghouse for effort and mental lapses has costed him the chance to get the PT needed to improve to this point.
