OK, that hurt. But, did it hurt you for the same reasons it hurt me? Let’s find out. I was hurt because once again Coach Billy decided to start Michael Porter at point guard. In hockey, they have a rating system called the “plus/minus”. Using the statistics available I was able to make this system apply to UK basketball. Here are the numbers, and if Coach isn’t reading this, I hope someone who has his ear will pass it along.
In the first two games of this season a very ugly trend has come to light. Here are the stats:
First, Michael Porter at the point for 40 minutes:
• 4pts 7Rebs 5A 9TOs
• UK has been outscored 100-67
• Before being subbed out in the beginning of games, UK has been outscored 34-9
o Down 19-5 to VMI (4:03) and down 15-4 to UNC (5:22)
o Has shot 3-12 (25%) from the field
o Has went 0-4 from 3pt
o Has committed 13 turnovers to the opponents 3
o Has allowed 10 steals while only making 2 for UK
o Has allowed opponents to shoot 12-21(57%), 5-6(83%) from 3pt
Now, DeAndre Liggins at the point for 45 minutes:
• 6pts 9Rebs 12A 11TOs
• UK has been outscored 88-84
I stopped right there. Talented players like DeAndre Liggins get better with experience and playing time. If Liggins were the one with a 5:9 A/TO ratio, it would make sense to limit his playing time while the elder, more experienced Porter kept things steady. This is clearly not the case.
All this being said, the TIME IS NOW. We are entering the 2008 Las Vegas Invitational. We host Deleware State and Longwood at Rupp for our next two games. Assuming we win those games, we will travel to Las Vegas to play against Kansas State and either West Virginia or Iowa. After that, we have a schedule of:
Lamar @Rupp
Miami @Rupp
Mississippi Valley State @Rupp
Indiana @Rupp
Appalachian State in Louisville
Tennessee State @Rupp
Florida Atlantic @Rupp
Central Michigan @Rupp
After these 12 games we would go to Louisville to play the highly touted Cards. We need to be somewhere between 12-2 and 10-4 coming into that game. More importantly, DeAndre Liggins needs to start and average 30mpg or more and Darius Miller needs to be the 6th man and get a lot of minutes.
